There is a British version of the boonie mate in DPM aka jungle hat/bush hat , we used them all the time when it was helmets off or when we were in the jungle (obviously), otherwise just a wooly hat/watch cap, but to be honest when on exercise 99% its helmet on as a infantier, also we used to trim the peaks back on the jungle hats so we didn't look like crows and get better visibility. There is also the old headover that can be rolled over to one side and used as cold weather hat

But we also wore our berets a lot, especially in NI when it was post goodfriday, kinda sucks as they fall off easy hahaha
